Academic Equipment Loan Program

Overview

Information on equipment available for check out to University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) students and employees for academic use.

 

Note
An active University of Alaska (UA) student or employee role is required to check out equipment.

 

Important
Prior to requesting a device, confirm the device has the specifications and software needed.

 

Warning
Individuals are responsible for equipment checked out to them. Any damaged or un-returned equipment will be reported to the University Police Department (UPD).

Eligibility

The following conditions must be met to qualify for a Chromebook, laptop, or Internet hotspot:

  • You must have current Student, Faculty, or Staff status with the University of Alaska.
  • Students must be registered for UAA classes in the semester of check out OR be admitted into a UAA degree program and taking classes through University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) or University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) in the semester of checkout
  • You must have a demonstrable need.
    • Examples for students: you do not have a functional personal or UA-provided device, you do not have access to Internet to complete classwork or cannot go to your local campus for Internet access.
    • Examples for staff and faculty: you want to test a Chromebook/laptop for student use in a class that you teach, or you have exhausted other Internet options such as the employee taxable Internet allowance.

Available Devices

Available devices include computing devices such as Dell Chromebooks and laptops, and Internet hotspots.

Note: If eligibility is meet and a check-out request is approved, IT Services will assign devices based on need and usage.

Chromebook

Recommended for basic class usage and participation. These systems are best for class participation and using Microsoft and Google web based products.  They are NOT capable of running RPNow.

Uses and software:

  • Blackboard
  • Zoom
  • Microsoft Office Online
  • Email
  • Web browsing
  • UAA Virtual Computer Labs

 

Dell Latitude 3410 i5 laptop

Recommended for basic class usage and participation. These systems are best for everyday processing such as Microsoft Office products. They are capable of running RPNow.

Uses and software:

  • All items available to Chromebooks, and
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Microsoft Visio
  • RPNow (Used for proctored exams when required by a faculty member or the Testing Center)
  • SPSS Statistics

 

Dell Latitude 3410 i7 laptop

Recommended for basic class usage and participation. These systems are best for everyday processing such as Microsoft Office products and higher processing needs. They are capable of running RPNow.

Uses and software:

  • All items available to Chromebooks and Dell Latitude 3410 i5
  • Higher processing requirements
  • Will only be checked out on a case-by-case basis as determined by IT Services

 

Internet Hotspot/Jetpack

For mobile Internet access for basic class usage and participation. Limited to use where service is available. To determine if service is available at your location, please submit and Academic Equipment Loan request for a hotspot.

Length of Equipment Loan

Devices are available to check out on a semester basis. Devices must be returned by the end of semester return deadline, or a extension request submitted.

Semester deadlines:

  • Fall Semester - December 20
  • Spring Semester - May 10
  • Summer Semester - August 15

For check out extensions there is a maximum of three consecutive semesters for device checkout, including the original semester. After three semesters, the device must be returned for service. 

Agreement Terms

When checking out equipment through the Academic Loan Program, you must agree to the following terms:

  • You are responsible for the care and security of the equipment. 
  • You will be held responsible for the total cost of replacement for a lost/stolen/damaged equipment.
  • Lost or stolen devices must be reported to UAA IT Services as soon as possible. This may help us recover the device.
  • Devices will be returned once eligibility requirements are no longer met.
  • Equipment will be returned by the end of the semester return deadline.
  • A new request form and agreement will need to be renewed each semester to extend check out of a device contingent upon eligibility being met. Extension requests must be submitted prior to the return deadline.
  • Devices can be checked out for a total of three (3) consecutive semesters upon approval of completed request for extension. At the end of the third semester the device must be returned for service, and a new device can be requested if eligibility requirements are met.
  • Equipment that is not returned or returned with significant damage will be reported to University Police.
  • All communication about this request and checked out devices will be sent to your university @alaska.edu email address.

How to Request Equipment

Equipment is requested by completing the Academic Equipment Loan Form. IT Services will review the form and contact you regarding the request.

How to Return Equipment

The return deadline is noted in your agreement text and above in Length of Equipment Loan section of this article. The equipment can be returned via mail or in-person drop off and should be returned to the department it was checked out from, either UAA Consortium Library or UAA IT Services department. Equipment that is not returned or returned with significant damage will be reported to University Police.
