How do I Use Managed Print from a Mobile Device (MobilePrint)?

Overview

With the wide range of devices available to the university community, the MobilePrint service allows you to easily print your files via email, online through a web browser, as well as from a traditional computer. This means you can print from your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop regardless of the operating system you are running. Almost any device that has email and/or web browsers will be able to print to any location that offers the MobilePrint service.

The university community can print documents from their personal device via the following options:

  1. Print using your university email account
  2. Print from your web browser
  3. Use your native Mac or Windows operating system printing capabilities
  4. Use the Pharos Print app for iOS or Android

Once you have sent your file to print, you may pay for and release your print job using either the online Print Center or one of the Print Release Stations around campus. You may pick up your print file at any of the printing devices supported by the Managed Print Service.

To pay for your print jobs, you must use your UAA Wolfcard or a Copy/Print card. Students, staff, and faculty may obtain their Wolfcard at the following locations:

  • The Consortium Library's front desk
  • The main Wolfcard Office located at the University Center
  • The MatSu campus Student Services office (FSM 101)
  • The Kenai River Campus Student Services office (McLane Commons)

Copy/Print cards can be purchased or renewed at one of the Value Transfer Stations located around campus. Individuals can deposit additional funds on their Wolfbucks account at one of the Value Transfer Stations, by visiting the Wolfcard Office on your respective campus, or online at http://eaccounts.uaa.alaska.edu/.

How do I use this technology?

To help you understand some of the jargon used in the printing services, we have pulled together a short list of some of the terms used in this document.

  • Managed Print: Refers to the overarching printing service offered at UAA in many facilities across campus.
  • MobilePrint: Refers to the ability to print your files from your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop regardless of the operating system.
  • Print Allocation: All UAA students attending classes at the Anchorage, Chugiak/Eagle River, JBER campuses that have paid the UAA Technology Fee start each semester with a credit of $12.00. This is a non-accumulating credit.
  • Print Release Station: Refers to the physical device, at applicable locations, that is used to send print job(s) to the print devices located in that area.
  • Print Center: Refers to the online website that allows individuals to upload and manage the files they have submitted to print.
  • Release: The act of paying for a print job(s) which causes the file(s) to be printed to the selected print device.

Requirements

  • To print using email, you must use your University of Alaska email address. The following email address domains are currently supported:
    • @alaska.edu
    • @uaa.alaska.edu
    • @uaf.alaska.edu

Things To Know

  • For additional information on printing, including a list of available locations, please refer to our Managed Print documentation.
  • Your file will be available to print for up to 2 hours.
  • The maximum file size you can upload to the online Print Center is 52.4 MB.
  • The maximum file size you can print from email is 25 MB.
  • If you attempt to send or upload text documents (.txt, .rtf, .csv) that contain no information, you will receive a notice that Uploading a zero length document is not supported.
  • When printing your files through the online Print Center, the cost is first deducted from your printing allocation then from your campus account. Please ensure that you have an adequate balance on your account for the printing request. Please note: it is not possible to use a generic Copy/Print card with the Print Center. If you need to pay for the print job with a print card, please use the physical Print Release Station located next to your desired printer in order to swipe your card.
  • When using the online Print Center under the Payment method section, you will see My Funds in bold text. The value associated with My Funds is the total of all the payment sources available to you. Below My Funds is the list of payment sources that have a balance, either positive or negative, for your account. Any payment source with a balance of zero ($0.00) will not be displayed. Note: individuals may have one or more of these payment sources depending upon their campus affiliation and roles within the university. The following accounts types are currently supported:
    • UAA Printing Allocation
    • UAA Wolfbucks
    • UAS Printing Allocation
    • UAS Whalebucks
    • UAF Bear Bucks
  • Physical Print Release Stations currently only support payment sources affiliated with the campus they are located at (e.g. UAA physical Print Release Stations only supports the UAA Printing Allocation and Wolfbucks).
  • Printing fees will be deducted from your account once you have released your print job from either the online Print Center or a physical Print Release Station.

Option 1: Print Using Your University Email

  1. When you are ready to print, open an email client associated with your University of Alaska email account.
  2. Compose a new message to print.bw@uaa.alaska.edu (for black & white printing) or print.color@uaa.alaska.edu (for color printing).
  3. Attach the file, or files, you want printed. If desired, you can paste your document’s text into the body of the email instead, and the system will read it as a print job. Otherwise, leave the body of the email blank.
    • Please note that each attachment is processed separately.
    • There is a maximum of ten attachments per email accepted.
  4. Click Send.
  5. A print job will be created and held in pending status for each attachment contained in the email. If the email contains text within the body greater 200 characters, it will also generate a print job, of which you can choose to release.
  6. You will receive an email when your file(s) are ready to print. This typically takes less than five minutes to process.
  7. Your file(s) are now waiting to be printed from any managed print release station on campus or online via the Print Center. Your files will remain queued in the system for up to 120 minutes.

Option 2: Print Using Your Web Browser

  1. Open a web browser.

Also, if you use this method of printing consistently, the system will remember your most used printers and have them displayed at the top of the list. If you need help finding the printer near you, look at the label on the printer. All of the printers should be labeled with a printer name that corresponds to the printer in the Select a printer list.

For example, you will not be able to select color if you are printing to a black & white printer. The options available include:
    • Color: You can choose between printing in black & white or color (default is black & white).
    • Sides: You can choose between double-sided (duplex) or single-sided (simplex) printing (default is double-sided).
    • Pages per side: Select whether you want to print one document page per side of paper or two document pages per side, allowing you to save paper and minimize your printing cost (default is one).
    • Copies: Allows you to select the number of copies of the file you would like printed (default is one).

A Confirm payment and print dialog window will appear that summarizes the number of documents, the total number of pages to be printed, the total cost, as well as the device that the file(s) will be printed to. Please review this information and if it is correct click Confirm. If it is not correct click Cancel. Please be aware that when you click the Confirm button, your selected file(s) will print immediately to the selected print device, and your account will be deducted for the cost of the print job(s) without the additional step of using a physical Print Release Station to release the job.

Notes:

  • You do not have to use the web browser to release your jobs; however, if you use a physical Print Release Station, you will not be able to modify any print options.
